Wood Gap Filling Service

At The Celtic Floor Company we consider wood floor repairs not just our work, but a craft that we’ve mastered to perfection and continue to do so. As a South Wales based flooring company, we specialise in wood floor restoration. This includes wood floor sanding, floor varnishing, oiling, repairs and gap filling. We’ve completed gap filling jobs in Cardiff, Newport, Bristol and surrounding areas for both domestic and commercial.

At some stage during their lifetime, wooden floor gap filling is an action needed with most timber floors. From the nature and age of your chosen wood, to how the floor was originally installed, gaps between the wood can occur, resulting in drafts and energy efficiencies while leaving the floor looking unattractive. There are a few possible methods for filling those gaps:

Method One: Dust and Resin Mix

Undoubtably, the most common method used for filling gaps between wooden floors is the process of mixing dust and resin filler. This method involves the collecting of the fine dust during the sanding phase of the installation and blending it with a clear resign filler, forming a ‘putty’ texture that has an identical colouring to your floor. The mixture is applied with a flat-edge filling tool and after drying is sanded down to give a natural finish. This form of gap filling is recommended for gaps no larger than 5mm. While this method is a cost-effective option, it is not a permanent solution as it tends to erode sooner and crack with significant floor movement, and over time has the tendency to fall through the gaps if placed directly over joists.

Method Two: Solid Wood Fillet Strips

This more permanent technique includes the cutting of small strips of the same species of wood used to the required size and covering them with gluing before placing them in the gaps. After leaving to dry overnight, they are then sanded, creating a level surface and leaving a more aesthetically pleasing and natural finish. This process is deemed most effective due to its increased durability as the strips tend to expand and contract with your flooring during changing seasonal humidity and does not suffer the issue of falling through the gaps as they too sit directly on the joists. Due to its longevity and durability, wooden fillet strips are the costliest of all the gap filling methods.

Method Three: Acrylic Fillers

The final option to fill those wooden floor gaps is by using acrylic fillers, arguably the simplest form of gap filling. Essentially a mastic, the acrylic filler is placed between the gaps and is left to dry. As the acrylic filler dries quickly and sanding is not required at the end (yet a wood filler cleaner is used to clean up any surplus filler), this is the considered the fastest of all three methods. While this technique is the most cost-effective, it is not a permanent solution, needing to be redone overtime. Also, finding a filler with identical colouring to your flooring can be difficult.
